Why Buy a Data or Media Safe?
A Data and Media safe is a must if you want to protect your data whether it is on a CD, DVD, flash drive or tape.
A home fireproof safe is not the best place to protect your CDs, DVDs and other data media. Most safes let the internal temperature rise to 360 degrees which exceeds the melting point of CDs, DVDs and other plastic media storage devices. They will not protect photo slides and negatives either.
You can also back up your data with an external hard drive that is designed to withstand fire and water damage.
Why Do Data Safes Cost So Much?
A data safe must keep the internal temperatures as low as 125 F. To do this, more and better insulating material is used than on fireproof safes designed to store paper documents. The extra material and heavier weights all add up to increase the cost. The real question you should ask is: Can you afford to lose your data to a fire?
